President John Mahama has directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akufo Dampare begin investigations into the tragic deaths of Ghanaians citizen during the 2020/24 General elections.
A statement from the presidency indicated that these incidents have left scars on the country’s democratic process.
The statement mentioned that, to ensure fairness and transparency in the investigation, the presidency outlined some five key steps that should be considered
The steps include; Establishment of a dedicated investigative taskforce, collaboration with witnesses and families of the deceased, a review of electoral security arrangements, use of forensic evidence and also collaborate with electoral and civic bodies.
The statement added that, “To maintain public trust and ensure transparency, we kindly request periodic updates on the progress of the investigation”.
“This will help to keep stakeholders informed and assure the public of your commitment to uncovering the truth.”
“We are confident in the competence and professionalism of the Criminal Investigations Department and trust that your efforts will yield the necessary results to bring justice to the victims and their families while preserving the integrity of Ghana’s democratic process,” the statement read.
