His appoint follows the nomination of Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson as Finance Minister-designate.

Dr. Cassiel Forson was vetted by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday and is highly likely to be approved as a minister, prompting the minority to nominate Mahama Ayariga and further confirm him as Majority Leader.

Mahama Ayariga will lead the NDC Caucus in parliament and seek to champion the agenda of the party in Parliament.

Before Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson became leader of the NDC caucus in January, 2023, Haruna Iddrisu lead the side from January 2017 in the 7th and 8th Parliaments.

In Parliament last week, when it became clear that, Ato Forson had been nominated for the Finance Minister portfolio, many, including the current Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo Markin from the opposite side started rooting for Mahama Ayariga to succeed Ato Forson.

Mahama Ayariga first became a member of Ghana’s parliament for the Bawku Central Constituency in January, 2005, until he lost his seat to Adamu Dramani Sakande of the New Patriotic Party in the 2008 elections.

He recaptured the seat in the 2012 elections.

He holds a Master of Law (LLM) from Harvard Law School in the United States of America and a Bachelor of Law (LLB) from the University of Ghana, Legon.
