Former MP K.T. Hammond has sued journalist Captain Smart for defamation over alleged remarks made during Onua TV’s election coverage, which he claims tarnished his reputation.
KT Hammond’s legal action stems from claims made by Captain Smart and his co-host for comments falsely depicting him as tribalistic following his defeat to an NDC candidate of Ewe descent.
The former Adansi Asokwa parliamentary seat lost his seat to Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
On December 9, 2024, on Onua TV, Captain Smart and his co-host allegedly attributed these specific comments reportedly attributed to K.T. Hammond.
“He said, he said: ah! How can an Ewe person unseat me? Eh, eh? He said: why would an Ewe person be the one to take the seat from me in an Ashanti township?”
The former MP is seeking damages, a public retraction, and a court injunction to prevent further dissemination of the alleged defamatory statements.
Meanwhile, KT Hammond has refuted the claims, arguing that Captain Smart and his Co-host directly painted him as a tribalist who refuses to accept the election outcome when a Ghanaian of a different heritage wins in the Ashanti Region.
