Former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan has revealed that he endured a very difficult time as the leader of the Ghana national team.
According to him, people turned the junior players in the Black Stars against him during his tenure as the captain and that led to him constantly being disrespected.
Asamoah Gyan said he became isolated and lonely as the Black Stars captain because the players didn’t want to mingle with him beyond the pitch because of the lies spewed against him.
“The kids would come into the team, all excited to see me, but then three days later, they would avoid me because they had been brainwashed.”
“People brainwashed the kids against me, so they didn’t respect me. After my departure, you can see the effect. Go back and look at the kids who were brainwashed—where are they now?” he questioned.
The former Sunderland and Udinese Calcio striker captained the team between 2012 and 2019, leading Ghana at four AFCON tournaments and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
He was Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals.
