Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the finance minister-designate, has stated in his first budget as Finance Minister he would abolish the betting tax and the e-levy.
According to Ato Forson, the betting tax and e-levy have failed to achieve it purpose.
Appearing before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, January 13, Dr Forson stated, “I insist that the betting tax must be abolished, and as Finance Minister, I will abolish it in my first budget because it has failed,”
“My position on the e-levy is well known. I have written articles about it, and my position has not changed,” he stated.
Ato Forson further raised concerns about the classification of the levy, calling it neither a direct nor an indirect tax. “I don’t know how to classify it”, He stated.
The Minister-designate has also revealed the NDC is committed to reintroducing the road tolls to generate revenue for road maintenance.
He added, “The NPP submitted a concession agreement to Parliament to reintroduce road tolls, but it was not laid”.
“We are not running away from this promise. We are a party that honours its commitments, and if road tolls are a means to raise revenue, we will implement them, If you use the road, you pay a toll. It is a standard practice worldwide. Ghana will not be the first or last country to adopt this”, Ato Forson stated emphatically.
