The Member of Parliament for Yapei-Kusawgu, John Abdulai Jinapor, addressed recent reports about Ghana’s fuel stock during his vetting at the Appointments Committee in Parliament.
In response to a question from Minority Leader Afenyo Markin, Jinapor clarified that his earlier comments about the country having limited fuel stock for power generation were represented by media headlines.
“I don’t write the headlines; I don’t write the stories. The truth is that what I said was specific and factual,” Jinapor stated.
Explaining his comments, he said, “I mentioned that we had five hours of heavy fuel oil (HFO) available, and that was accurate.
I also stated that we had zero hours of diesel fuel oil (DFO) for the SEDCO and Sunon Asogli plants. The recording is there, and the facts are clear.”
Jinapor stressed the critical situation, noting that if gas supplies were disrupted, Ghana could lose up to 370 megawatts of power within hours, which would result in load shedding.
The statement came against the backdrop of his earlier warning about a looming energy crisis.
In a previous interview with Joy News, during the inauguration of President John Dramani Mahama ,Jinapor revealed that Ghana had dangerously low fuel reserves for power generation.
“As of today, the confirmation we are receiving is that we have only five hours’ worth of fuel left,” he said, emphasizing that the situation could deteriorate further due to the outgoing government’s failure to procure adequate fuel despite warnings from the NDC transition team.
