The Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Blay Nyameke Armah, has declared that he does not want the statue of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to remain in his constituency.
According to him, he will be seeking the permission of President John Mahama to relocate the monument to Kyebi, the former president’s hometown in the Eastern Region
Speaking on the matter, the Sekondi MP criticized the placement of the statue, which was unveiled outside Sekondi’s Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital during Akufo-Addo’s recent “thank-you tour” of the Western Region.
The statue has sparked public backlash, with many questioning its relevance given the uncompleted projects in the area.
Blay Nyameke Armah expressed his dissatisfaction with the installation, stating that it does not align with the constituency’s priorities.
“I will ask President Mahama for permission to relocate the statue to Kyebi, where it may be more appreciated,” he said.
The statue’s unveiling, attended by the Western Regional Minister Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, was intended to honor Akufo-Addo’s contributions, including his flagship Free SHS policy.
However, the ceremony has been met with ridicule on social media, with many Ghanaians labeling it as “self-glorification.”
“It would be admirable if the president had allowed posterity to recognize and appreciate his work,” one user posted on X, reflecting the sentiments of several critics.
While some NPP supporters have defended the monument as a tribute to Akufo-Addo’s legacy, others argue that the resources could have been channeled into completing essential projects.
I don’t need Akufo Addo’s statue in my constituency. I will ask permission from President John Mahama to relocate the statue to Kyebi
