The Education Minister-Designate, Haruna Iddrisu has shared his opinion on President John Dramani Mahama’s proposed Family Values curriculum in Schools.
On Tuesday, January 14, President Mahama in a meeting with the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference hinted at his reluctance to legislate the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.
John Mahama stated, “We won’t need a bill to enforce our family values, and that’s why I think more than even the Family Values Bill, it’s us agreeing on a curriculum that inculcates these values into our children as they’re growing up so that we don’t need to legislate it”, he added.
According to Haruna Iddrisu, LGBTQ+ practices are opposed to his Muslim values and ethics.
He asserted that many Ghanaian parents would want their children trained in a way which is not consistent.
Speaking at the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 20, Haruna Iddrisu when asked about his opinion on a curriculum that inculcates family values into Ghanaian children stated, “I do not want to reduce this matter to a religious, debate it is a cultural wrong, with my religion as a Muslim you know where I stand on this matter, it is repugnant to my Muslim values and ethics”.
“I do not want to believe, that many a Ghanaian parent, would want their children trained in a way which is not consistent with the way you and I were brought up as Ghanaians, either from Effutu or in Tamale. That a man can relate to a man and a woman can relate to a woman”, he added.
The minister-designate further stated, “We are a country and we define our values, both social and cultural, we should expect all other persons to respect those values”.
