The Government of Ghana spends over $10 million on the Black Stars during years with major football competitions, according to a former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) George Afriyie.
Speaking on Metro Tv about the financial dynamics of managing Ghana’s national football team, he emphasized that the government is the biggest financial contributor to football in the country, outspending even FIFA’s allocations to the GFA.
“The biggest spender on Ghana football is the government of Ghana. Do you know how much the government puts into football? It’s more than what the GFA receives from FIFA,” he stated.
“For the Black Stars alone, during years with major competitions like the World Cup, the budget exceeds $10 million. This includes flights, logistics, and everything from the start to the end of the competition.”
The former GFA executive noted that while this level of expenditure is crucial to ensure the team’s success, it underscores the need for proper management and accountability in the use of resources.
When asked about calls to scrap the management committee system for national teams, the former GFA Vice President expressed strong opposition.
He argued that these committees play essential roles in the administration of the teams, but their effectiveness depends on the individuals appointed.
“I disagree with suggestions to scrap management committees,” he said.
“They play a lot of roles, but it depends on the kind of people you put on the committee. It must be people who understand football and are well-versed in our football system. Their expertise is very important.”
He emphasized that instead of eliminating the committees, the focus should be on selecting competent and experienced individuals who can contribute meaningfully to the success of the teams.
