Former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Cocoa Board, Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni has reacted to the state’s decision to drop all 27 charges against him in relation to the Lithovit foliar fertiliser transactions.
Elated by the charges being dropped, Dr. Opuni thank God for vindicating him and putting his detractors to shame.
“All I want to say is all power and authority belong to the almighty God and not human beings. And then I will add that the living god I serve has disgraced and cursed all my enemies and my persecutors, and my destiny haters,” he told the media after the charges were dropped.
Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni and businessman, Seidu Agongo were charged with causing a financial loss of more than GH¢271 million to the state in a series of Lithovit foliar fertiliser transactions in 2018.
The prosecution alleged that Seidu Agongo’s company, Agricult Ghana Limited, supplied Lithovit Liquid Fertilizer to COCOBOD under questionable circumstances, with claims that the fertiliser was substandard and had not been tested or approved for use.
Dr. Opuni was accused of facilitating the deal and bypassing established procurement processes, allegedly causing financial loss to the state and endangering the livelihoods of cocoa farmers.
Both Dr Opuni and Seidu Agongo consistently maintained their innocence throughout the trial, pleading not guilty to all charges.
The Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine ordered the state prosecution to drop all charges against the duo. The state attorney proceded to file the withdrawal citing Section 59 Act 30.
