Minister of Education-designate, Haruna Iddrisu has disclosed that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) will need a whooping Ghc345 million to implement its free tertiary tuition policy.
He made this revelation during his vetting on Monday January 20, 2025.
“President Mahama and the NDC promised free tuition for students from level 100 who would undertake normal programmes in the various public universities, including private universities,” Haruna Iddrisu stated.
“The country will require about Ghc345 million for the population of students who enter tertiary institutions, that is what the state will be required to do. We intend to provide that money to the affected universities, at least, to make refunds to those who have already paid fees,” he stated.
Highlighting on the stability of the policy, he mentioned that, government intends to mobilize funds with the help of the Ministry of Finance to help his ministry cater for the population of students in the country.
According to him, the ministry would refund fees already paid for to students through the institution.
He added that, “the beauty of this is that, its opened even parents who are willing to pay can do so”.
The NDC pledged to implement the free tertiary tuition policy during their 2024 campaign. This promise aimed at reducing the financial burden on students and their families while improving access to higher education.
