President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has revealed that Ghana is currently the leading gold producer on the continent.

This achievement, he stated, was a result of progressive policies and significant reforms in the mining sector implemented during his administration.

Delivering his final State of the Nation Address on Friday, January 3, 2025, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the record gold production of four million ounces in the past year, describing it as a historic milestone for Ghana’s mining industry.

Reflecting on his administration’s fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, he emphasized the environmental destruction it had caused across the country. The President acknowledged the political cost of his firm stance on illegal mining, including the loss of several parliamentary seats for his party in the 2020 elections. However, he maintained that the decision was necessary to protect Ghana’s lands and water bodies for future generations.

To strengthen Ghana’s mining sector further, President Akufo-Addo noted the revival of previously dormant mines, including the Obuasi and Bibiani mines, which have been restored to full operation.

In the area of mineral value addition, the President announced the establishment of a 400-kilogram capacity gold refinery, developed through a public-private partnership. He also highlighted the near completion of a $450 million manganese refinery at Nsuta, which is set to boost Ghana’s capacity in mineral processing.

The establishment of the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) and the Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation (GIISDEC) were cited as a significant step towards industrializing the country’s natural resources. These initiatives, according to the President, have created a solid foundation for generating revenue, creating jobs, and ensuring long-term economic benefits for Ghana.

As his presidency draws to a close, President Akufo-Addo expressed optimism that the frameworks established during his tenure would continue to promote responsible mining practices, protect the environment, and drive sustainable economic growth for the nation.
