Ghanaian socialite, Afia Schwarzenegger has blamed traders at the Kantamanto market for the fire outbreak which destroyed a large section of the market.
According to her, the fire was not caused by sabotage but by the recklessness of traders in the market.
She disclosed that many of the traders use electric stoves and gas stoves in their stores, paying little to no attention to them especially when packing up for the day, causing such fires.
“Using the gas cylinders in the market is not helping the situation. They claim this is where they do everything including cooking. Some fires may not spread and cause immense havoc but for the presence of cylinders filled with gas in the market,” she shared.
She revealed that about 60 percent of market women prepare their food in the market, with almost all the stores in the market having gas stoves and electrical stoves.
“Some even refuse to disconnect the stoves from the socket. These cause a lot of electrical fires,” she stated.
Afia Schwarzenegger expressed sadness over the fact that these traders are beginning the year with debts hanging around their necks because of the fire outbreak.
Hundreds of shops have been destroyed after a fire erupted in the Kantamanto market area during the early hours of January 2, 2025.
According to sources, the fire peaked around 1:00 AM to 1:20AM, and ravaged everything within a two-mile radius, destroying goods running into millions of cedis.
