Eric Opoku, the Minister-designate for Food and Agriculture has revealed every Senior high School will be required to own a farm under his reign as Agric minister.
According to him, he intends to encourage institutional farming.
He noted that by doing this Ghana will reduce the cost of school feeding and also enhance both the quality and quantity of the food provided to our students.
The information gathered on the school farm initiative is not new, according to reports School farms were common in Ghana but began to deteriorate in the late 2000s as interested parties and governments demonstrated less interest in the concept.
Speaking at the appointment committee vetting committee on Monday, January 20, Eric Opoku, detailed, “We are also going to encourage institutional farming. Every secondary school in this country will be required to own a farm.”
He further revealed his ministry is going to collaborate with the Ministry of Education to recruit labourers for secondary schools to help them establish and maintain their farms.
Eric Opoku added, “If nothing else, we can reduce the cost of school feeding and also enhance both the quality and quantity of the food provided to our students”.
Meanwhile, Eric Opoku has indicated plans to revamp the poultry sector, he stated his ministry plans to collaborate with poultry farmers’ associations, providing them with the necessary financial resources to expand their businesses and increase production.
