President John Dramani Mahama has cautioned supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to refrain from repeating the actions of New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters in 2017, following their victory in the 2024 elections.
Speaking at a presidential dinner held at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), President Mahama expressed concerns over reports of individuals attempting to take over state institutions, including the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) in Tema.
“I know that in 2017, the NPP, after losing the election, indulged in attacking government offices, seizing properties, taking over public toilets, toll booths, and even confiscating vehicles on the streets,” Mahama stated. “We must not repeat such behavior.”
The President emphasized the need for NDC supporters to act responsibly and demonstrate that they are different from their political opponents.
He called on party leaders at the regional and constituency levels to identify and engage the youth who played key roles in the party’s victory.
“I know our youth made significant sacrifices for this victory, but rather than taking matters into their own hands—seizing fertilizers or warehouses—we must organize their energies in a productive way,” Mahama urged.
He also warned that any further disruptions could lead to law enforcement stepping in to maintain order at critical state installations.
Mahama highlighted the importance of earning the continued trust of Ghanaians, urging NDC supporters to uphold law and order as a sign of their readiness to govern responsibly.
“Let us show Ghanaians that we are different. Let us respect the mandate they have given us and not squander it with disorderly conduct,” he added.
The President’s remarks come amidst reports of attempted takeovers of offices at the GPHA by individuals claiming allegiance to the NDC, a situation he described as unacceptable and unproductive.
