A group calling itself the Coalition of Volta Youth against the Sale of Government Lands is calling for the decentralization of the Operational and Recover All Loot (ORAL) committee after uncovering what they claim to be an illegal private development on land belonging to the Ho Nursing Training College.
According to the group, the land, which is situated near the school, is being developed by a private individual with political ties, without the knowledge or approval of the institution’s management board.
The coalition alleges that the principal of the school has entered into an arrangement with the developer, allowing the construction of a 10-unit housing project intended for sale.
The group claims that the profits from the sale would be shared between the principal and the developer, a scenario they describe as a “broad daylight robbery.”
The coalition has expressed outrage over the situation, emphasizing that the land in question is vital for the expansion and future development of the Ho Nursing Training College, including the construction of other facilities.
They argue that the principal’s actions are a betrayal of the institution and the people of the Volta Region, calling for her to be held accountable for what they perceive as an abuse of public office for personal gain.
“It is appalling that the principal of the school, knowing that the land was meant for educational purposes, has allowed a private developer to construct buildings for sale,” said a spokesperson for the group. “This is selfishness, greed, and self-centeredness at its worst.”
The coalition also highlighted that much of the building material and equipment had been removed from the site following the loss of power by the previous administration, signaling an attempt to cover up the project.
They are demanding a thorough investigation into the matter, calling for the ORAL team to extend its efforts beyond the capital, Accra, to regions like Volta where such alleged land sales are occurring.
“We will not sit and watch this injustice unfold,” the spokesperson added.
“We are calling on the ORAL team to investigate the documents behind this project and the individuals involved. The principal must be brought to book for her role in this illegal arrangement.”
The coalition’s call for a decentralized operation of the ORAL team underscores their frustration with what they view as a systemic problem of land mismanagement and corruption, particularly in regions outside the national capital.
