Commuters aboard an Ash Ssangyong Istana public transport vehicle with the registration number AS9845-22 narrowly escaped a potentially deadly robbery attempt after a group of unidentified gunmen tried to stop their vehicle in Atebubu, a town located in the Bono East Region of Ghana.
The shocking incident unfolded as the vehicle was traveling through the busy town when the assailants, armed with firearms, opened fire on the vehicle in a bid to force it to stop.
Reports indicate that the gunmen fired multiple shots, hitting the vehicle’s windscreen and bonnet, causing panic and fear among the passengers.
Several passengers sustained injuries from the gunfire, although no life-threatening injuries have been reported.
In a stroke of luck, the driver remained calm and, despite the gunfire, managed to accelerate and speed away from the attackers.
This quick thinking likely saved the lives of the passengers on board.
As the vehicle sped off, the assailants failed to catch up, and the attack ended without the gunmen being able to successfully rob the passengers.
The incident has left residents in shock and raised concerns about the rising wave of criminal activity in the area.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the attack, though the identities of the gunmen remain unknown.
Atebubu, a key commercial hub in the Bono East Region, has witnessed its fair share of criminal activity in recent months, but this brazen daylight attack has drawn even more attention to the safety of commuters on the region’s roads.
