The Juvenile Court in Accra has directed the Commander of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to prevent Ms. Karen Baaba Sam from leaving the country with her four and a half-year old daughter.
This directive follows Ms. Sam’s failure to comply with a previous court order requiring her to leave the child in the custody of her father, Mr. Kwadwo Adjei, until the resolution of an ongoing legal dispute between the two parties.
Presided over by Ms. Bernice Mensimah Ackon, the court also instructed the Director General of the Ghana Immigration Service to ensure that Ms. Sam does not travel out of the country with the child.
According to court documents, Mr. Adjei and Ms. Sam began a relationship in April 2017 and cohabitated like a married couple until the birth of their daughter.
However, their relationship deteriorated in 2021/2022, with Mr. Adjei alleging a shift in Ms. Sam’s behavior and accusations of romantic involvement with another man, which she denied.
In February 2024, while Mr. Adjei was abroad for a medical checkup, Ms. Sam informed him of her plans to take their daughter and niece to a beach resort. Mr. Adjei transferred GH¢50,000 to her for the trip, but upon his return to Ghana, he discovered the funds had not been used as intended.
During a family trip to the Big Blue Resort upon his return, Mr. Adjei alleged that their daughter revealed witnessing her mother smoking continuously with another man during the earlier trip to the same resort.
When confronted, Ms. Sam reportedly left the house, leaving the children in his care.
The court’s latest ruling seeks to ensure the child remains under the jurisdiction of the court while the lawsuit initiated by Mr. Adjei proceeds.
