President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, who also serves as Chairman of the National Election Security Taskforce, to launch an immediate investigation into the election-related killings that occurred during the 2020 and 2024 elections.
In a statement dated January 10, 2025, signed by the President’s Secretary, Dr. Callistus Mahama, and addressed to Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the President emphasized that these tragic fatalities continue to tarnish the nation’s democracy.
The statement underscored the urgent need for a thorough investigation and justice for the victims and their families.
The 2020 election witnessed eight fatalities due to violent incidents in constituencies such as Ablekuma Central and Odododiodio in the Greater Accra Region, Techiman South in the Bono East Region, Savelugu in the Northern Region, and Awutu Senya East in the Central Region.
Similarly, the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) reported six deaths during the 2024 election in areas including Tolon, Damongo, Awutu Senya East, and Ahafo Ano South West.
To ensure a thorough investigation, the presidency outlined five key proposals for the IGP: Dedicated Investigative Taskforce:
Establish a specialised team within the CID to focus exclusively on these cases for effective resolution.
Collaboration with Witnesses and Families: Conduct detailed interviews with eyewitnesses, victims’ families, and other relevant individuals.
Review of Electoral Security Arrangements: Assess the actions and decisions of security personnel deployed at affected polling stations to identify any negligence or involvement.
Forensic Analysis: Use advanced forensic techniques to examine physical evidence, including bullet casings and weaponry.
Engagement with Electoral and Civic Bodies: Collaborate with the Electoral Commission and other agencies to review reports from the 2020 and 2024 elections for additional insights.
The President’s secretary further urged the IGP to provide timely updates on the status of the investigations to ensure public awareness and transparency.
