The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, aka Chairman Wontumi has been accused of being the mastermind behind the various market fires in the country.
Ghanaian-US based social commentator, Kevin Taylor made this allegation on his X handle.
According to him, Chairman Wontumi and the NPP are reeling from a horrible election defeat, and have taken out their loss on the Ghanaian public.
“Chairman Wontumi and @nppghanahq are burning markets because they lost the 2024 election,” he wrote on his X page.
Ghana has recorded several incidence of market fires soon after the nation entered 2025.
The first market fire to be recorded was in Kantamanto where hundreds of market stores were burnt to ashes.
The Ghana National Fire Service’s investigations revealed the cause of the fire as either an electrical fault or arson.
The Kwadaso Wood Market and Tamale Timber Market were the next to catch fire days after the Kantamanto market fire. These fires also resulted in the loss of numerous properties ranging into millions of cedis.
On the night is Sunday, January 12, 2025, a massive fire engulfed the Techiman Central Market in the Bono East Region, leaving traders and residents devastated as numerous shops were consumed in the blaze.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire spread rapidly due to the dense clustering of shops and flammable materials within the market.
