Some Muslim youth in Ashaiman, Washington, in the early hours of January 16,2025 , apprehended a young man for using pages of the Qur’an as toilet paper in a nearby bush.
The incident has sparked outrage and renewed calls for respect toward religious texts and practices.
The Qur’an, meaning “recitation” in Arabic, is the holy scripture of Islam. Muslims believe it is the word of Allah (God) as revealed to the Prophet Muhammad over 23 years through the Angel Jibril (Gabriel).
It is considered the ultimate source of guidance, outlining principles of faith, worship, and daily life.
For Muslims, the Qur’an is not just a book but a sacred symbol of their devotion to Allah, and any form of desecration is seen as a serious offense.
Reports gathered by EDHUB reveal that the Muslim youth had noticed over time that torn pages of the Qur’an were being used inappropriately in a bush commonly frequented by locals for defecation.
Deeply disturbed, they reported the issue to the local Imam and began monitoring the area.
Their vigilance paid off when they caught the young man red-handed.
Upon interrogation, he admitted to the act, explaining that the Qur’an in his possession had belonged to his late father, who was a Muslim.
He further confessed that, as a Christian, he lacked understanding of the Qur’an’s sanctity and did not realize the gravity of his actions.
The Muslim youth, while expressing their disappointment, have called for mutual respect among religious communities.
