Former Auditor General, Daniel Yao Domelevo, has praised President John Dramani Mahama for emphasizing the importance of asset declaration among his appointees.
However, Domelevo argued that the directive should have been enforced before officials were sworn into office.
Daniel Domelevo stressed that asset declaration is a critical tool for promoting transparency and accountability in governance.
His remarks follow President Mahama’s call on newly appointed ministers, during their swearing-in ceremony on January 22, to declare their assets to enhance public trust and uphold ethical standards.
While Domelevo acknowledged the President’s directive as a commendable step, he pointed out that requiring declarations prior to swearing-in would better align with legal requirements and demonstrate a stronger commitment to good governance.
He further called for stronger enforcement of Ghana’s asset declaration laws, urging institutions like the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to ensure compliance and hold public officials accountable.
According to Domelevo, proactive enforcement would deter corruption and foster greater confidence in the governance system.
He encouraged President Mahama to institutionalize a policy mandating pre-swearing-in asset declarations for all future appointments, which he believes would set a higher standard for integrity and accountability in public service.
