The mob, reportedly acting out of frustration over the death of a detainee, overpowered law enforcement officers and vandalized property before torching the building.

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that the unrest was triggered by the death of a suspect arrested the previous night for an alleged theft.

According to a statement from the Police, the suspect was apprehended around 10:00 pm on Friday, January 10, 2025, and detained for investigation.

At approximately 2:20 am, the suspect reportedly complained of feeling unwell and was rushed to the Ejura Government Hospital, where he died while receiving treatment.

Following news of the suspect’s death, tensions escalated in the community.

A group of enraged youth stormed the Ejura Police Station, setting parts of it on fire and forcibly freeing detainees.

Armed military personnel were deployed to support the Police and had to fire warning shots to disperse the mob.

Meanwhile, another faction of the crowd stormed the Ejura Government Hospital and forcibly removed the deceased’s body.

The Ghana National Fire Service was called to the scene to extinguish the fire at the police station.

No casualties were reported during the chaos, and the Police, in collaboration with community leaders, have since restored calm to the area.

The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of a thorough investigation into the incident and has vowed to bring those responsible to justice.

Security has been heightened in the area, with the military still on standby to maintain order.
