The Member of Parliament for Fomena, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, has been re-elected as the Second Deputy Speaker of the 9th Parliament of Ghana’s Fourth Republic.
His nomination received bipartisan support, with both sides of the House seconding his candidacy.
This marks a continuation of Amoako’s role, as he previously served in the same capacity during the 8th Parliament. Notably, he was elected as an independent candidate in 2020 and held the position during a politically divided House.
In the 2024 parliamentary elections, he aligned with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), further solidifying his relationship with the party.
His re-election challenges earlier concerns that the current 9th Parliament, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) holding the majority and President-elect John Dramani Mahama also from the NDC, would function as a “rubber stamp.”
Amoako’s ability to garner bipartisan support underscores his reputation as a unifying figure in Ghana’s legislature.
Amoako, a land valuer and lawyer by profession, brings a wealth of experience to the role and is expected to continue providing balanced leadership in Parliament.
