President Akufo Addo has pardoned 11 convicts jailed for various offences.
According to a statement from the Office of the President exercised his prerogative of mercy in accordance with Article 72(1) of the constitution, President Akufo-Addo pardon certain convicted persons.
Eleven convicts were granted pardoned by President Akufo-Addo according to the letter from the office of the President dated December 31, 2024.
The list includes:
- Akwasi Alhassan was convicted of murder and sentenced to death on March 19, 1993. Alhassan has spent 31 years in prison. He is now serving a life imprisonment by presidential order.
- Beatrice Ofori convicted of human trafficking on June 6, 2023, and sentenced to eight years with hard labor, the 64-year-old suffers from severe hypertension with mobility challenges.
- Frank Obeng was sentenced to 40 years for manslaughter. He is currently serving his term in Nsawam Prison. His sentence has been reduced to 12 years following the presidential pardon.
- Stephen Nyarko was imprisoned of a plot to rob and robbery in December 2010 and sentenced to 30 years, he has served 22 years.
- Osman Inusah was imprisoned on a conspiracy to commit robbery; He faces mental health challenges.
- Joseph Nana Kwaku Boateng was imprisoned of tried export and possession of narcotic substances on May 28, 2019, and send to prison for15 years.
- Emmanuel Adu Mensah was imprisoned for possession of narcotics in April 2024 and sentenced to 15 years, he was serving his term at Nsawam Prison.
- William Ato Essien was sentenced to 15 years with hard labor by an Accra High Court in December 2023.
He was jailed for his inability to pay back to the state some GH¢90 million, which he was said to have stolen from the bank.
The information from the office of the president suggest William Ato Essien is suffering from a severe life- threatening medical condition and has undergone multiple surgeries as a result.
- Kwabena Twum Ampofo was convicted of possessing narcotics and sentenced to a prison term of 10 years in April 2024. He is currently serving his prison term in Nsawam.
- Alexander Nii Lante Lawson was imprisoned of stealing and sentenced to a prison term of five years, with hard labor, his health has declined.
- Philip Akpeena Assibit was send to prison for 12 years in 2018 for his role in causing financial loss to the state relating to his role at the National Youth Empowerment Programme.
Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo term in office will officially end tomorrow January 7, 2025, with John Mahama swearing in ceremony taking place at the Black Star Square.
