Former Minister for Roads and Highways, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has debunked claims that the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government only constructed 673 kilometers of new roads during their eight years in power.
According to him, Roads and Highways Minister-designate, Kwame Governs Agbodza lied when he appeared before the Appointments Committee for his vetting.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, Asenso-Boakye accused Agbodza of misrepresentation to Ghanaians, and clarified that the Akufo-Addo government constructed a total of 13,624 kilometers of roads between 2017 and 2025.
“Honorable Speaker, let me put on record that as of December 2024, per the transition report, the Akufo-Addo government had constructed 13,624 kilometers of road. This figure is against the 4,630 kilometers of road constructed by the previous government in eight years,” Asenso-Boakye said.
He argued that the total road network completed under the Akufo-Addo administration was a record-breaking achievement and included significant components such as asphalt overlays, gravelling, reconstruction, and bridges.
He proceeded to provide a breakdown of roads constructed during Akufo-Addo’s tenure.
Asphalt Overlay: 1,955.25 km
Bridges: 35
New Construction: 673.27 km
Gravelling/Regravelling: 6,185.90 km
Rehabilitation: 1,665.07 km
Upgrading/Surfacing: 2,538.40 km
Resealing: 101.02 km
Partial Reconstruction: 231.90 km.
The former roads minister argued that Kwame Agbodza intentionally focused on only the 673 kilometers of newly constructed roads to paint a misleading picture of the government’s performance.
Asenso Boakye explained that while new road construction was a key aspect of the administration’s efforts, other critical components such as asphalt overlays and re-graveling were equally significant.
