Banking Consultant Dr. Richmond Atuahene has ranked General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong as the second most impactful leader in Ghana’s history in terms of productive investments, following Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
Speaking in an interview with GHone General Acheampong’s legacy, Dr. Atuahene praised his foresight in infrastructure and resource management.
“When Kumasi depended on the Owabi Dam for water, Acheampong realized it wouldn’t suffice for a growing population and initiated the Barekese Dam project. Similarly, for Accra, he expanded beyond Weija by constructing the Pong Dam to secure the city’s water needs.”
He also noted Acheampong’s efforts in generating electricity and his use of internally generated funds during a period when Ghana faced isolation due to the “Yentua” policy, which rejected external financial dependency.
“Acheampong used resources from cocoa production, which was thriving at the time, to fund key projects,” he said.
Dr. Atuahene credited the leader for significant housing developments, such as Sakumono, Dansoman, and Adenta estates, which still stand as testaments to his vision.
“If you take Dr. Kwame Nkrumah as the top visionary for productive investments, I’d place General Acheampong right after him,” .
