Political activist, Oliver Barker-Vormawor has called for the abolishment of the Council of State.
According to him, the office is “a white elephant” which only seeks to aid and abet the president in doing whatever he wants rather than ensuring checks and balances.
He indicated that the Council of State is a waste of tax payers monies and they only enjoy huge sums in ex-gratia rather than actually contribute to nation building.
Barker-Vormawor cited the Akufo-Addo administration as a clear example of why the Council of State has to be abolished.
He wrote on his X page, “Abolish the Council of State. It’s a white “elephant”. Mainstream accountability rather than expect a band of octogenarians awaiting ex-gratia to keep the President’s worse impulses in check. It didn’t work with Nana Addo. I don’t know who we are expecting it to work with. We can save that ex-gratia money for better purposes.”
The Council of State in Ghana is a body of prominent citizens, analogous to the Council of Elders in the traditional political system, which advises the President on national issues.
The Council of State was established by Articles 89 to 92 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.
The Council of State should include a former Chief Justice of Ghana, a former Chief of the Defence Staff and a former Inspector General of Police and the president of the National House of Chiefs. Each region of Ghana also has an elected representative. The President of Ghana also appoints eleven members. Members stay in office until the term of office of the president ends.
