A pharmacist and past president of the Pharmaceutical Students Federation of Ghana, Dr. George Anagli, has clarified the common misconception that milk neutralizes medications. He explained that milk does not neutralize any drugs.
Instead, the concern lies in the calcium and other minerals found in milk, which can interfere with the absorption of certain medications, especially antibiotics.
Dr. Anagli emphasized that when taking specific medications, particularly antibiotics like Ciprofloxacin, it’s important to avoid milk.
The milk can reduce the absorption of the drug into the bloodstream, potentially decreasing its effectiveness.
“Milk does not neutralize medications; it interferes with the absorption, meaning you may not get the optimum effect of the medication,” he explained.
