Nana Boadi Amponim Abodade III, the Krontihene of Akyem Asoum, has criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his treatment of traditional rulers, stating that chiefs in Ghana will not tolerate another leader who disrespects their authority.
In an interview on GHOne TV, the Krontihene alleged that the president once instructed chiefs to stand and greet him, an act he described as demeaning to their esteemed positions.
He added that this approach has marred President Akufo-Addo’s legacy among traditional leaders.
“A good friend of mine, who is also a chief, told me once, ‘Let’s see if he will come around and instruct chiefs to stand up to greet him.’
It’s not a good legacy,” Nana Boadi revealed, referencing instances where chiefs were allegedly compelled to show undue reverence to President Akufo-Addo.
Nana Boadi’s remarks come at a time when traditional leaders and citizens alike are assessing the outgoing administration’s legacy and its impact on the nation’s cultural and social development.
The Krontihene expressed disappointment in the president’s inability to foster goodwill and respect between his administration and the chieftaincy institution.
“He could have done more,” Nana Boadi remarked, lamenting what he saw as squandered opportunities and a failure to strengthen Ghana’s traditional governance structures.
“We pray we don’t get another Akufo-Addo to be president of Ghana.”
