The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has revealed it is facing a critical crisis as the Akufo-Addo government refuses to pay GH¢118 million in outstanding debt, putting the release of the 2024 WASSCE results in jeopardy.
Dr. Clement Apaak, the Deputy Ranking Member on the Education Committee in Parliament, has joined the growing chorus of voices urging the government to settle the debt, warning of severe consequences if the issue is not addressed immediately.
The delay in payment has led to the suspension of crucial operations, including repairs to essential equipment for scanning objective cards, a key step in the results release process.
In a statement, WAEC urged the government to expedite payment to facilitate these repairs and ensure the timely release of results.
Dr. Apaak, speaking to Citi News, strongly condemned the government’s failure to honor its financial commitments to WAEC.
“The results of our wards who wrote WASSCE earlier this year are being withheld in abeyance because the government is failing to meet its commitment to WAEC,”
He said, emphasizing the negative impact on students and tertiary academic calendars.
He called on the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia-NPP government to settle the debt and avoid further disruptions to the education system.
