Senior High School (SHS) students under the free SHS policy are being served gari, soup and hot water at their dining halls.
The kitchen prepares hot and serve it in a pantry bowl for students to use in mixing up their gari to form, ‘eba’ so they can eat with the soup provided them.
A video of this meal has been shared on X by @eddie_wrt
In the video a man who visited a school which was eating that for lunch was appalled by the kind of meals the students were being fed under the free SHS policy.
He could be heard saying, “I will send this (video) to the honorable. This is the kind of meal students are eating under the free SHS policy. Gari paa, then you boil water for the children. This is the kind of meals student are eating in school. How can you do this. I am really disappointed,” he said.
The Free SHS program was implemented in September 2017 by the Akufo Addo government. It was designed to remove cost barriers to education, which had previously prevented many children from continuing their education after junior high school.
The policy faces challenges such as insufficient resources and infrastructure, and inequitable allocation of resources. Others have reported that schools do not have enough food to meet the needs of students.
