The Transport Operators Association of Ghana has announced a 15% increase in transport fares, effective Thursday, December 5, 2024, in response to rising fuel prices and escalating operational costs.
This decision comes after a similar fare adjustment was initially announced by the Concerned Drivers Association, set to begin on Saturday, November 2, 2024.
However, the earlier fare hike proposed by the Concerned Drivers Association was quickly met with opposition from the Ministry of Transport.
In just a matter of days, the Ministry dismissed the proposed increase, citing concerns over the impact on commuters and the broader economy.
The association had been forced to withdraw the announcement after intense pressure from government officials, who insisted that fare adjustments should be linked to broader economic conditions.
The new 15% fare hike by the Transport Operators Association reflects the rising operational costs, particularly for vehicle maintenance, parts, servicing, and fuel.
Mr. David Agboado, a spokesperson for the association, explained that the increase is necessary to cover the soaring costs that have made it unsustainable to maintain the current fare levels.
Despite the earlier rejection of the fare increase, the association has now reiterated its decision, emphasizing that the adjustments are critical to the sustainability of transport services.
They have called on the public to understand that the fare adjustment is crucial for continued operations and to ensure the viability of the sector.
