Senior political science professor at the University of Ghana, Legon, Prof . Ransford Gyampo has sharply criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for focusing on its “Break the 8” campaign, calling it “insulting” and a display of “arrogance.”
According to Gyampo, the NPP’s emphasis on winning the 2024 elections without addressing its performance in government reflects poor governance and a lack of accountability.
In a recent interview, Gyampo expressed disappointment with the NPP’s approach to governance, accusing the party’s leadership of prioritizing election strategies over effective leadership.
“Instead of focusing on governing well and earning the trust of the people, the NPP is fixated on how to win elections,” he said.
“Their focus is not on improving the country, but on manipulating votes, with a heavy focus on regions like Asante and appointing people purely for electoral gain.”
Gyampo emphasized that good governance should naturally translate into electoral success, noting that a party’s track record in office should speak for itself.
“When you govern well, the people will reward you with votes. But if you fail to deliver on your promises and prioritize election-winning tactics over real governance, then you’re insulting the intelligence of the electorate,” he added.
The political scientist went on to argue that the NPP’s desire to “Break the 8” referring to its ambition of securing a third consecutive term in power was not only misguided but also reflective of the party’s arrogance.
“The idea of wanting to break the 8 when you have performed abysmally is insulting and the height of the party’s arrogance and impunity,”.
