Business mogul Alfred Agbesi Woyome has refuted claims by the Electoral Commission (EC) that the declaration of the Ablekuma North election results was made under duress by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Woyome, who spoke to the media at the Tesano Police Station following a misunderstanding between the NPP and the NDC, emphasized that the EC, led by Jean Mensa, or any other party, has no legal standing to suggest that any results were declared under duress, especially when such declarations took place in the presence of the police and the media.
“There’s been a declaration already, particularly in Greater Accra North.
What are they coming to do tomorrow? What position does the law take in this matter?” Woyome questioned during his remarks. He insisted that if anyone believed the declaration was made under duress, the only legal recourse was to take the matter to court.
“The EC, Jean Mensa, or anyone else has no right to claim that the declaration was done under duress,” Woyome stated. He pointed out that the process was carried out openly, with both the police and the press in attendance, which made any suggestion of coercion or duress invalid.
Turning his attention to the Ashanti Region, Woyome also addressed concerns regarding the alleged disruptions during the election processes. According to him, three constituencies Obuasi East, Asante Akim North, and Asante Akim Southwest were facing challenges that needed immediate attention.
In the case of Asante Akim North and Asante Akim Southwest, he alleged that there was no coalition of results before the declaration process could begin, as the military allegedly intervened and disrupted proceedings.
Woyome referenced a WhatsApp conversation between the EC District Director and an NPP parliamentary candidate, which indicated that the military’s presence escalated tensions and resulted in the destruction of materials.
he stated that while some may seek to challenge these outcomes, the legal path remains clear those with grievances should go to court.
