Ghanaian reggae musician and radio presenter, Blakk Rasta, has advocated for parliamentarians to use more of Pidgin English to make discussions in parliament more accessible to the public.
Speaking in an interview, he argued that the use of Pidgin English will help make proceeding more relatable and close the communication gap between lawmakers and the public.
“I’m glad to hear people like A Plus and Baba Sadiq can speak Pidgin. I’ve heard them do it, and I want to see more of it in Parliament. The big English is too much,” he said.
Blakk Rasta believes that the use of “big English” in Parliament often disconnects many Ghanaians, making it difficult for them to fully understand the issues being discussed.
“Radicalise the Parliament House. Bring it to the level of the people. Encourage them to be part of the discussions. Right now, when issues are being discussed in Parliament, it feels like bourgeoisies drinking tea”.
“So we all wait for the news to break it down for us. I want to hear Pidgin in Parliament,” he explained.
He emphasized the importance of coming down to the level of the ordinary Ghanaian in understanding some of the complex issues in the country.
