Some supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), last night, confronted Electoral Commission (EC) officers in the Weija-Gbawe Constituency, accusing them of manipulating election figures to match already declared results.
The heated exchange in the the EC’s office quickly spiraled into chaos, with protesters demanding a full redeclaration of the parliamentary results.
The unrest comes at the back of the victory of Jerry Ahmed, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate, in the closely contested 2024 parliamentary race.
Ahmed, who secured 32,608 votes, edged out Felix Odartey Lamptey of the NDC, who garnered 30,460 votes.
Despite Ahmed’s slim win, accusations of tampering with figures have fueled suspicion among many NDC supporters, sparking the confrontation.
The NDC’s leadership issued a statement urging the Electoral Commission to act swiftly, calling the situation a “ticking time bomb” that could escalate further if not addressed.
“We are for peace, but we cannot let this blatant injustice go unchallenged. The people are angry, and the truth must come out,” said a senior party official.
They called on the Electoral Commission’s leadership to address the issue promptly to maintain peace and order.
‘’We are for peace and we don’t want our toil and the justice we deserve to be taken for granted’’
