A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team, Dr. Sammy Ayeh, has sharply reacted to the Finance Minister’s recent claims of leaving behind a resilient economy.
He accused the government of disrespecting Ghanaians, highlighting contradictions in their financial narrative, particularly regarding the COVID-19 funds.
Ayeh pointed out that while the government claimed to have spent 12 billion Ghana cedis during the COVID-19 pandemic, they had received a total of 32 billion Ghana cedis from sources such as the IMF, World Bank, the European Union, and the Bank of Ghana.
This left an excess of approximately 20 billion cedis, which was never fully accounted for.
“You spent 12 billion and had an excess of about 20 billion, and now you’re claiming that COVID is why you’re struggling?” he questioned, expressing disbelief at the government’s continued justification.
According to Ayeh, this misuse of COVID and the Russia-Ukraine war as excuses for economic hardship was one of the main reasons why Ghanaians voted against the current government.
He asserted that the Finance Minister and the Vice President, who heads the economy, are continuously presenting an unrealistic and misleading narrative about the state of the economy.
“How can this be considered a strong economy?” Ayeh asked, emphasizing the stark contrast in economic performance.
