Special voting for the Western and Eastern Regions is being held today, December 5, following a rescheduling from the original date of December 2.
This change was prompted by the discovery of a ballot paper leakage in the two regions, which led to swift action by the Electoral Commission (EC) to preserve the integrity of the election process.
The EC responded by recalling and reprinting the affected ballot papers. Jean Mensa, the Commission’s Chairperson, made the announcement during an emergency news conference on Sunday, December 1.
This recall was deemed essential to ensure the election’s credibility ahead of the 2024 General Election.
For the upcoming general election, a total of 328 special voting centres have been set up nationwide, accommodating 131,478 voters.
These voters include members of the security services, media personnel, and election officials, all of whom cast their votes ahead of the general public to ensure they can fulfill their duties on election day.
Speaking on December 4, Dr. Bossman Asare, a Deputy Chairperson of the EC, confirmed that the Commission is fully prepared for today’s special voting in the Western and Eastern Regions.
He assured the public that all necessary materials for the voting process had been dispatched to the affected regions, ensuring a smooth and transparent exercise.
Dr. Asare further outlined that there will be 33 voting centres in the Eastern Region and 17 in the Western Region, and urged all special voters in these areas to take part.
