Scores of aggrieved caterers under the School Feeding Programme have stormed the premises of the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection in Accra, demanding payment of their outstanding arrears.
The protest follows the caterers’ earlier threat to demonstrate if the Akufo-Addo government failed to pay their monies in full.
They criticized the government’s decision to pay their arrears in tranches, claiming it has left them burdened with debts after pre-financing the programme.
While the government announced on July 1 that it had cleared the first-term arrears for caterers across all 16 regions, the caterers insist that their payments remain incomplete and are calling for immediate action to resolve the issue.
The School Feeding Secretariat previously stated that settling these arrears was a crucial step in supporting the Ghana School Feeding Programme and ensuring uninterrupted meal provision for students.
However, the caterers argue that delays and partial payments are negatively affecting their livelihoods and the programme’s effectiveness.
