A recent Afrobarometer survey has revealed that 61% of Ghanaians have considered leaving the country.
According to Afrobarometer, the number of Ghanaians who have considered leaving the country has increased from 41% in 2016 to 61% in 2024.
This makes a significant 20-percentage-point increase compared to 2017 when the figure stood at 41%.
According to the information gathered from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Ghana ranks sixth among ECOWAS countries in terms of emigration rates.
Unemployment is the key driver of many young Ghanaians’ sentiment to travel abroad to search for better job opportunities, and high-paying jobs, and escape the economic hardship in Ghana.
Most Ghanaians consider North America as their preferred destination followed by Europe.
In Ghana, the youth and skilled professionals are driving the increasing interest in emigration as they contemplate the economic challenges and limited job opportunities in the country.
