Residents of Elmina in the Central Region have protested against a salt mining lease granted to a private developer by their traditional leaders.
The demonstrators, dressed in red and carrying placards, marched through the main streets to express their dissatisfaction and demand accountability from the traditional leaders.
The placards had inscriptions like, “we want our salt’, and ‘Give us what is due us and don’t sell Elmina.’
The group claims the traditional council has failed to involve the community in decisions regarding the lease of their salt mining lands.
Leader of the demonstrators, John Quayeson spoke about their concerns.
“We want our leaders to know that the salt is not for them, that is what we want them to understand..”
