The National Union of Okada Riders has called for the regularization of commercial okada operations, emphasizing that it has become an integral part of the transport sector in Ghana. According to the union, there is currently no structured plan for their operations in the country.
Speaking at a press conference earlier today, the National Spokesperson for the Union, Solomon Akpanaba, highlighted that motor riders in the country operate without proper training or education on basic road rules, which he believes contributes to the high number of road accidents in Ghana.
“Currently, it’s important for Ghanaians to know that all motor riders in the country are operating without a formal skill acquisition process.
Riders in Ghana are required by law to obtain a riding license without undergoing any training,” Mr. Akpanaba explained.
“This is a critical error that leads to thousands of avoidable accidents.”
He emphasized the need for riders to acquire licenses only after undergoing training that is recognized by the state.
“Even with the license acquisition, riders are not provided with the necessary training or education,” he added.
Mr. Akpanaba also pointed out that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has consistently stated his belief in the importance of data, yet he does not seem to have data on okada riders, a gap he believes should be addressed.
