Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Prof. Ransford Gyampo, has sharply criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) claims that President-Elect John Mahama won the 2024 elections simply because people didn’t vote.
According to Gyampo, this narrative is an attempt to cover up incompetence and poor governance.
‘’I think I have some four preliminary remarks that I want to make briefly, if you would indulge me. You know, number one, the idea that John Mahama won the 2024 elections because people didn’t go out to vote, in my view is a nonsensical, childish, propagandistic attempt at covering up for incompetence and bad governance”.
He argues that the real reason people stayed home is due to widespread disappointment and disillusionment with the current government.
Speaking on Key point on TV3 Prof. Gyampo pointed out that voters were let down by corruption, economic mismanagement, nepotism, and arrogance, all of which eroded confidence in the ruling party.
“People did not go out to vote because of corruption, because of arrogance, because of economic mismanage, management by fake holy people, because of nepotistic governance of family and friends and concubines that all coalesced to render the hitter to NPP fanatics and other election key makers hopeless in the political elite”.
He emphasized that the perception of an incompetent candidate being more competent than the other also contributed to voter apathy.
He challenged those who claim voter apathy as the cause of their defeat, questioning why they are now setting up committees to investigate the matter, rather than confronting the real issues that led to the loss.
“So in my view, people should stop tickling themselves and laughing if they know that apathy was the reason why they performed abysmally and they were defeated, you know, in this election, why are they now setting up a committee to go into interrogation”.
“If we use Akufo-Addo’s standards most of you will be in prison”
