Vice Chairman of Bawumia’s Campaign Team, Nana Akomea, has revealed that the campaign’s internal research, conducted as early as February, showed former President John Dramani Mahama leading by nearly 10 percentage points in the presidential race.
In an interview with randy abbey on good morning Ghana on metro tv, Akomea explained that while the research indicated Mahama’s lead, the margin began to narrow as the campaign progressed.
By September and October, the gap had reduced to just two percentage points, giving the NPP a renewed sense of confidence.
“In February and March, Mahama was leading us by about 10 points, which is quite a lot,” Akomea said.
“But by September and October, it had come down to about two. We were very confident and felt we had a good chance.”
“We knew there was a lot of apathy, a lot of disgruntlement among our supporters,” Akomea added. Despite this, the NPP remained hopeful, believing that the tightening race could lead to a second-round battle.
Akomea pointed to the election results as the ultimate proof of the polls, acknowledging that the turnout especially the 2 million people who stayed away was a key factor in the NPP’s defeat.
“Anything else would just be a projection, but we knew from the monthly polls,” he concluded, emphasizing the need to understand why so many voters chose not to participate.
