ACP (Rtd) Dr. Benjamin Agordzo, a retired senior officer of the Ghana Police Service, In a recent interview, discussed the controversial sacking of police recruits by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government shortly after assuming power in 2017.
He highlighted the uncertainty that many recruits faced during this period, noting that some of the trainees, who had already passed out from the police training school, were dismissed.
Dr. Agordzo explained that the issue was particularly distressing as it affected families who were initially excited about the recruits securing jobs.
The news that these recruits might be sacked after the election of a new political party added to the anxiety, and many were left in limbo.
“So people get jobs, and once they get jobs, their families are also excited.
Then all of a sudden, the news is going around that they may be sacked when a particular political party takes over,” he said.
Recalling the events of 2017, Dr. Agordzo revealed that certain police recruits, who were already in training, were dismissed by the government.
He expressed concern about the manner in which these decisions were made and criticized the approach taken.
“Certain people were removed because they said they did not meet the criteria for the recruitment,”
he stated, though he added that he did not have all the details about the decision-making process.
he called for political stability and reassured that such actions should not be repeated, offering support for the assurance given by former President John Dramani Mahama that such events would not happen again under his leadership.
