Sheikh Issah Salifu Taylor has been elected as the new Member of Parliament (MP) for the Tarkwa-Nsuaem constituency in a stunning victory during the 2024 general elections. The independent candidate unseated George Mireku Duker of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in what observers are calling a major political shift.
Provisional results from all 263 polling stations in the constituency show Sheikh Salifu Taylor securing 35,906 votes, representing 47.11% of the total valid votes cast. Mireku Duker, the incumbent MP who has represented Tarkwa-Nsuaem since 2016, garnered 27,404 votes (35.96%), while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Joy Joycelyn Andoh, finished third with 12,903 votes (16.93%).
The outcome marks a significant change in the political landscape of Tarkwa-Nsuaem, as voters rallied behind Salifu Taylor’s message of independent leadership and sustainable development. His victory ends Mireku Duker’s eight-year tenure and signals growing appetite for alternative representation in the constituency.
In his post-election remarks, Sheikh Salifu Taylor expressed deep gratitude to the people of Tarkwa-Nsuaem for their trust and support. He vowed to serve all constituents regardless of political affiliation and prioritize initiatives that will foster development and unity in the area.
“This victory belongs to the people of Tarkwa-Nsuaem,” he said. “I am committed to working tirelessly to address the challenges we face and to ensuring that our constituency thrives.”
As Sheikh Salifu Taylor prepares to take up his new role, attention will turn to how his independent leadership will impact the constituency and its development priorities. His win is also seen as a broader reflection of voter dissatisfaction with traditional party politics in certain areas.
The Tarkwa-Nsuaem constituency now begins a new chapter under a fresh mandate, with residents and stakeholders optimistic about what the future holds.
