Kevin Taylor, a US-based vlogger has allegedly fingered Kusi Boateng in the 17 intercepted boxes of gold being transported illegally to Dubai.
According to Kevin Taylor, Kusi Boateng took the lead to Dubai to wait for the gold that was intercepted yesterday by the Ghana Police.
Kevin Taylor wrote on X, “ Kusi boateng I beg leave Dubai and come home wai na the gold was intercepted yesterday . The ofui took the lead to go wait for the gold in Dubai 😂😂😂😂😂”.
The Ghana Police Service intercepted 17 boxes of gold yesterday December 17, 2024, at around 8:30 pm.
The gold smugglers were busted at the Aviance Kotoka Airport in Ghana.
The gold bars have been escorted to the Greater Accra Regional Police Headquarters.
Meanwhile, the UK government has revealed that Ghana loses $2 billion annually in tax revenue to illegal mining and gold smuggling.
Speaking at a Civil Society Organization (CSO) meeting with political parties on mining reforms and governance, Chris Aston, team lead for the UK Ghana Gold Programme (UKGGP) stated, “This is all lost revenue to the government of Ghana. At the moment, the sector is vulnerable. It is being exploited by organised crime groups. The threats are growing. The gold smuggling has more than doubled. We want to disrupt illegal mining and illicit financial inflows. Ghana loses more than US$2 billion yearly to gold smuggling”.
In 2022, it was reported that close to 60 tonnes of gold were smuggled out of Ghana.
