The Electoral Commission of Ghana has cited former EC chair, Dr. Afari Gyan to justify its decision to re-collate some nine constituency results.
In a tweet on the Electoral Commission’s social media page on X, they alluded to the fact that re-collation after the declaration of results is not new in Ghana’s electoral processes.
The Electoral Commission through an Accra High Court order has re-collated the Obuasi East, Okaikwei Central, Tema Central, Nsawam Adoagyiri, and Techiman South, which were previously declared in favor of the NDC have been re-declared for the NPP.
Two constituencies left outstanding are the Ablekuma North and Dome Kwabenya.
This move by the EC has been met with criticism from some Ghanaians considering all the re-collated results so far have been in favor of the New Patriotic Party.
The EC statement on X reads, “Re-collation after the declaration of results is not new. It has happened before,” the EC stated, listing notable instances:
- 1998: During district-level elections in the Dompose Kokwaado Electoral Area in the KEEA District, the EC, under the leadership of Dr. Afari Gyan, overturned an earlier declaration and declared the correct candidate as the winner.
- 2004: Under Dr Afari Gyan, the EC re-collated parliamentary results in the Pru Constituency, overturning the initial declaration in favour of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, who was subsequently declared the winner over the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate.
- 2004: The Tolon Constituency results were re-collated, and the correct candidate was declared the winner.
- 2004: Re-collation also took place in the Yapei-Kusawgu Constituency, leading to the declaration of the rightful winner.
