Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has strongly criticized the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, accusing her of becoming a danger to Ghana’s democracy.
Speaking to the media, Dafeamekpor argued that the Electoral Commission (EC) is operating beyond its constitutional mandate, particularly after the declaration of results in recent elections.
He stated, “Jean Mensa cannot be a law unto herself.
The Electoral Commission is subject to the Constitution and CI127, and must operate within those parameters.”
He pointed to CI127, which clearly outlines the process for declaring election results, stating that the Electoral Commission has no right to ignore or invalidate results once they are declared in accordance with the law.
“The Constitution is very clear in Article 99, Clause 1, Paragraph E, that if there is a dispute over parliamentary election results, the High Court is the appropriate forum to address the issue,” he said.
Dafeamekpor emphasized that any aggrieved party or individual who challenges the declaration of parliamentary election results must seek legal redress through the High Court, not through the arbitrary actions of the EC.
